Throughout her life, images whether on paper, canvas, or wood, have been modes of Debra Lanning’s self expression. Her paintings convey a sense of nature through abstractions. Lanning’s strong sense of color creates an abstract landscape that is contemporary and inspirational.
Debra received her Associate of Liberal Art from Grand Rapids Community College. She went on to attain a Bachelor of Fine Art from Grand Valley State University. During her time at GVSU she was awarded a scholarship to attend Oxbow, Chicago Art Institute’s summer camp. Once she completed her studies at the university she began painting and participating in multiple solo and group exhibitions. Her work can be found in many notable collections such as Greektown Hotel & Casino in Detroit, The Melting Pot in Ann Arbor, Westin Hotel in Tampa, and MEI Hotel in North Miami.
Her love of the water has strongly influenced her work. Water is constantly moving, rolling and bubbling. There is a natural repetition which occurs within the sapphire waters of the earth’s lakes and oceans. This last year has been an inspiring adventure, to capture nature. Losing sight of land, sailing off into the horizon is quite an experience, then coming across to the other side and seeing land appear. Being out on the water where you are able to sit and watch the dawn break, then seeing the vibrant colors shift with the day and end with an explosion of color. It’s just amazing to watch all the light bounce around, reflect and twist. After an adventure it is a pleasure to return to the studio to revisit the horizon, express the experience and create art.
