George has a fascination for masks,be they Japanese,Chinese, or Italian.Their frozen expression, blank eyes, scornful smile-all give him a sense of the mysterious, powerful yet strange. In this particular work, hedeliberately painted the mask to be skinlike,
as if the concubine is peeling off her face; all this suggesting that, even in the olden days, concubines were no exception in wanting to be somebody else. The piece was transformed from George's original idea of a pastel-type
color painting to a glazing of the background down to almost nighttime.
The mask was kept as the main focus, with the golden fan, and finally the
girl holding the mask, following in importance. If interested please contact Teri Galleries for availability at 504-887-8588, 1-800-533-8374 or via email at info@terigalleries.com.
